Men’s Sexual Health

Sex is an important part of life. For many men, thinking about sex starts early, often before puberty, and lasts until their final days on earth. On one level, sex is just another hormone-driven bodily function. On another, it’s an act of pleasure , the loss of oneself in another, the coming together of opposites in a temporary union of yin and yang. What is life if not this ?

Sexual health isn’t merely the absence of disease . It refers to a state of well-being that lets a man fully participate in and enjoy sexual activity. A range of physical, psychological, interpersonal, and social factors influence a man’s sexual health.

Optimal male sexual health includes a healthy sexual desire (libido) and the ability to get and sustain an erection (erectile function). Although physiology can affect both the desire for sex and the ability to have sex, mental health and emotional factors also play important roles.

Erectile dysfunction (ED)

Ejaculatory dysfunction encompasses a diverse range of conditions that occurs when a man has a problem properly ejaculating his semen, either ejaculating too soon (Premature ejaculation), too late (Delayed ejaculation), back into his own bladder (Retrograde ejaculation) or not at all (Anejaculation). These situations can result in poor sexual satisfaction by the man and his partner, ineffective reproduction and emotional trauma.”

PREMATURE EJACULATION

Premature ejaculation is a condition wherein a man ejaculates too early or before he or his partner would desire. The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) applies a cut-off of 15 seconds from the beginning of sexual intercourse. Such men describe feeling that they have less control over ejaculating & wish they could last longer. Both psychological and biological factors can play a role in premature ejaculation. Premature ejaculation is a common and treatable condition. Medications, counseling and sexual techniques that delay ejaculation or a combination of these can help improve sex for you and your partner..”

Testosterone Booster – How is it important?

Lack of sexual energy could be due to male hypogonadism, which occurs when the testicles do not produce enough testosterone, the male sex hormone. In fact, fatigue is one of the most common side effects.

Testosterone levels drop about 1% each year beginning in a man’s late 30s, and could fall by as much as 50% by age 70. (A blood test from your doctor can determine if you have low testosterone.) Testosterone boosters can often help spark sexual energy in men with low levels.

In 1999, Modern Maturity magazine and the AARP foundation polled 1,384 adults age 45 and older about the role sex played in their lives. The findings paint a detailed picture of sexuality at midlife and later.

The importance of sex

In 2016 , a study “Sexual Satisfaction and the Importance of Sexual Health to Quality of Life Throughout the Life Course ” conducted in US adults , high importance of sexual health to quality of life was reported by 62.2% of men and 42.8% of women . Sexual health was considered a highly important aspect of quality of life for many participants, including those in poor health. The study also provides an overall picture of sexual satisfaction in the 55% of men and 45% of women who were sexually active in the previous month. Results revealed that satisfaction with sex life peaked in the mid- to late 30s and declined after age 70 . Secondly, satisfaction with sex life was associated with general self-rated health; participants in excellent health reported significantly higher satisfaction than those in fair or poor health. Thirdly , unlike the ratings of high importance, particular health conditions were associated with lower satisfaction with sex life, namely hypertension for women and depression or anxiety for men ..

Factors affecting sexual satisfaction

Not surprisingly, one of the major factors associated with respondents’ satisfaction was the availability of a partner. In the 45–59 age group, roughly four out of five individuals had partners; by comparison, only one in five women over 75 had partners. Declining health also appeared to have an effect on sexual activity and satisfaction. On a list of features that might improve their sexual satisfaction, the men ranked better health for themselves or their partners at the top. Although impotence emerged as a significant issue for nearly a quarter of the men, less than half of those men had ever sought medical treatment for the problem.
